Prevention and Management of Infection in the Catheterized Patient
Abstract
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection is a significant hazard despite available methods of prevention. These infections cause significant morbidity, prolonged hospital stay, and contribute to mortality caused by Gram-negative septicemia.
Based upon understanding of definition of infection, bacteriology, drainage system, incidence, sequels, and portals of entry of bacteria in catheterized patients, guidelines for the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections are presented.
